Dare to Love my Best Friend – Ellie Hall
It’s that point of year where people are looking for a good book to take on holiday or just to enjoy reading in the garden, and I have the perfect, easy-reading romance novel for you! Although this is the 5th book in a series, you don’t need to have read the previous ones to get a good grip on the characters and story arc.
Written from the point of view of the two protagonists, Quincy and Daisy, it follows their lives and how misfortune has caused them to live separate lives and, for Daisy, to live with a huge secret. Although the plot may sound like a cliche, the story is so much more. It’s not all cheese and happiness. There’s heartache, sadness, second chances and best friends becoming more. Of course, there is a happy ending, but let’s face it: we all enjoy reading a novel that ends leaving us feeling comforted and satisfied – that’s why so many authors choose to end their stories in this manner!
The theme of amnesia is not only integral to the story but also something readers may relate to because they have experienced it first hand with a loved one. Earning trust is something that takes time and love, and once you have it, shouldn’t be taken for granted. Hall handles this delicately and astutely with Daisy’s relationship with Quincy, even thought it can be frustrating when he doesn’t want anyone to know about his condition. Hall also shows us that a secret isn’t ever a secret if even one person knows and it can cause destruction without communicating properly. There is a lot to be learnt from Daisy and Quincy’s mistakes. One of them is always being open and honest if your relationship and co-parenting has any chance of succeeding.
One thing I think Hall does extremely well is drawing us in to Daisy and Quincy’s lives. As we get their POV, we feel their emotions and yearn for them to find their way back to one another. Daisy has to earn his trust while keeping a huge secret – they have a son together but the revelation would cause too much distress and sadness as he can’t remember being together. Although some people deter from reading books that are from dual POV, I recommend giving this one a go.
