Authentically Indie: K.O. G. S. (Keeper of the Gates) Issue 1 by Rodney Jacobsen and Dan Demille

K.O.G.S. is a graphic novel available on kindle. This had me very excited because I am a huge graphic novel fan, but because I live in Japan it is rare that I have access to English Western style graphic novels. Sadly, I am not a fan of Manga – the Japanese style of graphic novels. This one grabbed me with the dynamic cover art and captured my attention with a great name. I had very high hopes for the art, storyline, character development, and overall writing, and I was not let down.

From page one, the story captured my attention, and the art was good but really began to pop from page two. I liked the approach of letting the story grab the reader and then letting the art elevate the storytelling. The art and story worked together and didn’t feel like either were fighting for my attention. There was a great balance that allowed to take in both and enjoy them equally which gave the novel a nice ebb and flow. There were moments of suspense and desire to know more and see more that really drew me in.

I don’t want to give too much away about the plot as there are some really great twists. I enjoyed the character development and reveals. I love seeing Native American representation especially in a graphic novel. I really enjoy a lot of gore and violence in my graphic novels, and K.O.G.S. delivers in this in both the storytelling and the art. There are also some nice interludes that allow us to get to know the characters outside of combat. The ending and issue 2 teaser were perfectly executed, and I will definitely be reading more. This was a fun ride!
